Kitchen Confidential: DIY Lip Color with Jeanine Lobell

vogue:

by Emily Weiss

Clockwise from top left: Lobell and daughter Esme, test-driving a homemade lip gloss; powder pigments and mixing cups; Gray Sorrenti, makeup mixologist; a rainbow of colors.

You have to finish one before you start another!” Jeanine Lobell instructs her eight-year-old daughter, Poppy, on a recent Saturday morning. We’re in the family’s Upper East Side kitchen, but we’re not making pancakes. We’re making lipstick. Lobell, the makeup artist who founded Stila, has several projects in the works (including a collaboration with Opening Ceremony), and who better to inspire new color combinations than her young daughters Esme, Wallis, and Poppy? Joining them today is the photographer Mary Frey and her ten-year-old daughter Gray (dad is Mario Sorrenti), makeup artist buddy Jo Strettell and her daughter Jasper, several of Esme’s friends from a sleepover the night before, and Lobell’s husband, the actor Anthony Edwards, popping in and out.

With coffee brewing and a steady stream of pop favorites humming from the iPod speakers, the group gets to work. Drugstore buys like castor oil, vitamin E sticks, colorless lip glosses and balms are assembled in the sunny green kitchen, along with a rainbow of colored powder pigments and a variety of new plastic tubes, jars, and palettes, all from Lobell’s go-to online supplier, diycosmetics.com.

what an evening!
took the light rail with alex to meet up with two other friends (the two lovelies in the picture with me) at the orpheum where billy elliot is playing.  realized one of them was on the back of the train we were on…so at one of the stops, alex and i decided to run to the back of the train to meet up with emily.  sooooo…basically, the train started moving as i approached one of the doors and got left behind.
i decided to wait for the next one. all was fine as i got on the next one that came, but my phone died before i got to my stop.  when i got there, alex and emily were nowhere in sight of the station…so i basically decided to book it to the orpheum’s stage door by myself, hoping to god they were there.  keep in mind, it felt a little sketch cause it was a friday night in downtown near all the bars and clubs that like to attract creepy men on the weekends.
as i’m speed walking to the orpheum, i run into ross—our other friend we were going to meet up with who was ushering at the orpheum tonight.  he told me he had no idea what was happening as HIS own phone had died and that he had tried waiting outside of the stage door for a bit already.  sooo we were THIS close to going over to homoranch’s ludachristmas party.  BUT we decided to go back to the stage door and try to figure out where alex and emily were.
when we got to the stage door, it was already 11:30, and it was pretty obvious pretty much all the cast had left.  there was a small group of people out there, however, and they asked us if we were waiting for anyone.  we asked if they knew if faith had left as we were supposed to meet up with her.  and unfortunately she had, but they told us she might be at the minneapolis opening party that was happening tonight.
sooooo. we followed them into the restaurant it was being held at.  we didn’t see them and was about to leave when the hostess asked us what we needed.  upon replying that we were looking for some friends, she said, “O! you mean the billy elliot reception?  that’s happening on level 3!”
we figured it was worth a try to go look for them there…got up there and was greeted by this big cast and crew party happening without a familiar face in sight other than the cast of billy elliot we had seen in the show last night.  we wandered around and couldn’t find alex, emily, or faith and just decided to crash the party…free food and drinks with probably some important theatre people? we were there already! someone had KINDA invited us.
BUT i still felt strange, like i was some imposter who wasn’t supposed to be there since i hadn’t really been invited to come.  i didn’t know if going out to get “drinks” equalled going to the billy elliot cast party to faith prince…
10 minutes later though, as me and ross were awkwardly staring around in awe of what was happening around us, i spied alex and booked it to where he was…and thankfully, at the table with him were emily and faith.
soooo. after an interesting adventure i had to take to get there, i spent the night at a party with the cast of the billy elliot national tour that i had been invited to by faith prince. and i was THIS close to not going to see billy elliot.  and had i not run into ross, god knows what i would have done once i got to the orpheum.  and had i not been left behind by the light rail, ross would never have ran into any of us and would have ended up going to ludachristmas instead.  everything that led up to tonight really happened by chance.  i mean, alex and i had no idea ross and emily were going to see the show last night either until we ran into matthew on the light rail who was on his way to the walker art center.  he told us to look for them.  we were luckily sitting only a few rows away…alex invited them to come with us to see faith backstage after the show.  really by chance.  and i didn’t want terribly to see the show, but something was telling me i should. and look what happened?
faith told us tonight right before we left the party: “always follow your instinct, your gut.  do what feels right, and it’ll lead you to where you need to be…that’s what i did. look where i am!”  if that’s what her formula is for winning a tony, then hell, i’ll stick to it.
an adventure by chance.  life. living. it only happens when you sit back and acknowledge that you have no idea what’s gonna come next, when you don’t try to control it but just let it happen, but instead find the glory in discovering what the next moment will be when it does occur.
i gotta say. getting to the party is what i remember most.  it’s always the journey not the destination that is more memorable when one has an adventure of some sort.

Frivolity & fun for Mulberry

“Indulging in cake, jumping on beds, having pillow fights and all the while clutching some of Mulberry’s latest luxury handbags. A day in the life of models Abbey Lee Kershaw and Hanne Gaby Odiele must be oh so tough.

This gorgeous, fun campaign was photographed by Steven Meisel.”
